What does it take to be a champion?
Is it skillset? Is it drive? Passion? Teamwork? Knowledge? A genuine love for the game? Or is it everything?
These questions are certainly top of mind for many people in their careers, and it’s especially timely as we head into Super Bowl LIV. So, we sat down with former 49ers quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion, Steve Young, to get his take on the topic.
He discusses the mentality his father instilled in him from a young age and how that impacted his success into high school, college and the NFL. When he joined the 49ers in 1987, the organization upheld a championship culture into which Young fit perfectly. He dissects what that culture entailed and why it worked so well for players like him, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice (to name a few).
Speaking of Montana, Young also explains what it took to remain mentally prepared as second-string to arguably one of the best quarterbacks of all time, and when he eventually did take the field, how the organization shifted under his leadership--all of which he molds into business lessons for leaders across any industry.
Finally, Young dives into his transition from the NFL to sports broadcasting, providing advice for anyone else taking a new path in their career.
