New Leadership Reinvents Powdered Peanut Butter Business for Modern Tastes

When Craig Entwistle took over as CEO of Bell Plantation, the company’s initial rapid growth had stalled. JC Bell invented powdered peanut butter that could be stored and reconstituted without all the fat of the traditional peanut butter after the Secretary of Agriculture issued a challenge to the industry when a glut of peanuts entered the market. With new competitors, and new products in the marketplace, PB2 knew it would need to adapt.

“NetSuite has provided us with visibility that we didn’t have before and allowed us to step up our game as far as what we're able to do and the decisions to make. I feel like we have become a better company because of the data and the resources available.” Steven Ramage, VP Finance & Operations, PB2

Health-Conscious Consumers Drive Renewed Interest

PB2 gets remade
Entwistle and a team from his prior company saw potential for the product amidst the popularity of protein shakes and health-conscious consumers. They took an equity stake, rebranded to PB2 and set about making the company over. They shut down unprofitable business lines and reduced staff.
Data-driven decision model
Coming from a data-driven organization, leadership quickly realized that PB2’s existing QuickBooks-based system was forcing them into gut-based decisions instead. Additionally, the company couldn’t track inventory and lacked critical customer-based data.
Waste down, profits up
PB2 evaluated several ERP systems, including SAP, but chose NetSuite for its cloud-based capabilities and scalability. Using the visibility NetSuite provides, PB2 has cut inventory waste from 8% to 2%, significantly improved the cost of goods and driven profitable processes around cash management.
Remote access enables flexibility
Now able to access data from its manufacturing facility in Tifton and offices in St. Simons, Ga., PB2 has ambitious growth plans that it believes NetSuite can continue to support. It is considering adopting demand planning and forecasting to streamline operations.
